Dates & Deadlines

The JCPS calendar moves fast, and the deadlines that matter most are easy to miss. Here is the rhythm of a typical school year so you know what is coming.

Exact dates change year to year. Always confirm with the district before you plan around them — and subscribe below so we can remind you when each window opens.

  1. Early fall

Magnet & school choice applications open

Application season opens for magnet schools, magnet programs, and optional programs. Start touring and comparing before the window closes.

  2. Fall

    School showcases and open houses

Middle and high schools host showcase events. This is the best chance to ask about academics, transportation, and program requirements in person.

  3. Late fall / early winter

    Application deadline

Applications submitted by the published deadline receive first-round consideration. Late applications are handled after the first round.

  4. Winter

    Kindergarten registration

Families with a child turning five register for kindergarten. Have proof of residence, immunization records, and a birth certificate ready.

  5. Spring

    Placement notifications

Award and placement letters go out. Read the response deadline carefully — a missed reply can release your seat.

  6. Late spring / summer

    Transfers, appeals, and transportation

Second-round applications, transfer requests, and bus assignments are finalized before the new school year begins.
